The Great White Shark is one of the most famous sharks in the ocean! It can grow as long as a car and has rows of sharp teeth that help it catch its food, like fish and seals. Even though it looks scary, the Great White doesn’t hunt people—it usually mistakes them for something else. Great Whites are strong swimmers and can even jump out of the water when they’re chasing food. They have a super sense of smell and can detect tiny drops of blood from far away!

About the Great White

Myth: All sharks are dangerous to humans.

Truth:

Out of over 500 shark species, only about a dozen are considered potentially dangerous to humans. Most sharks are harmless and avoid people entirely.

Sharks don’t have bones!

FUN FACT

Instead of bones, their bodies are made of cartilage - the bendy stuff in your nose and ears!

Extension Activities

  • Why do you think sharks are often misunderstood or feared in the media?

  • Draw an underwater scene from a shark’s perspective. What do they see as they swim through the ocean?

  • Try drawing a great white shark! If you can’t remember what they look like, that’s ok! Find a photo of a great white and use it as a reference!
