The goblin shark is a rare and deep-sea shark known for its long, flat snout and jaws that can shoot forward to grab prey. It lives far below the surface, often over 3,000 feet deep, and is sometimes called a "living fossil" because its species has been around for millions of years. With its pale pink color and unusual look, the goblin shark is one of the strangest-looking sharks in the ocean.

About the Goblin Shark

Myth: Sharks are scary monsters!

Truth:

Some sharks might look strange, but they aren’t monsters. They’re just doing their job in nature.

Some sharks have glow-in-the-dark skin!

FUN FACT

A few deep-sea sharks glow to hide from predators or surprise their prey!

Extension Activities

  • Activity: Play Like a Shark

    What to do:

    • Smell like a shark: Blindfolded guessing game with smelly things (e.g., orange, vinegar, cinnamon).

    • Hunt like a shark: Hide objects (like toy fish) around the room for a “shark hunt.”

    • Swim like a shark: Practice gliding with arms out like fins, “sneaking up” on prey.

Keep it playful! Use music or a “shark dance” video to add movement.

  • Show a shark in its natural habitat—include coral reefs, fish, seaweed, and more!

(Mixed media project option: use clay, paper, or recycled items.)

  • …of a shark!

Make a comic strip, picture story, or write a few sentences about what a shark does from sunrise to bedtime.
